Money seems to rule us all, but it doesn’t have to :). The first step to living life to the fullest on a little is to see what you’re spending that money on.

1. Write or type out your fixed costs. Any bill or charge that you pay every month.

2. Estimate what you spend on entertainment and shopping each month using your bank statements and/or credit card statements.

3. Write down your monthly income.

Compare the two and see how much you have left over. Are you breaking even each month? Have a surplus? Or spending more than what you have?

I was surprised to see how much I was spending on eating out the first time I did this. It’s a simple exercise, but with online banking nowadays, I feel like we don’t pay attention as much. People used to balance check books which would keep them in check when they spent money. Once I saw how much I spent on eating out at restaurants, I was able to budget myself and evaluate the situation.

Now that you know where you’re money goes, you can really focus in where you can save. :)
